I enormously enjoyed this highly unusual free verse book.  Told from multiple perspectives- this is a living history archive of the building of the panama canal.  I would highly recommend this book and I look forward to reading more of Ms. Engle’s excellent works.

Margarita Engle manages to make historical figures come alive in this lively text- bristling with energy and emotion.  She shares the voices of the flora and fauna of Central America alongside the grumbles of tired workers, and haughty tones of financiers- tied together in a cohesive narrative.  This book will appeal to young readers studying the period in history alongside lovers of poetry.
